Nintendo Ds Lite

quote:
Nintendo revealed its expected redesign of the Nintendo DS handheld system. Called the DS Lite, this new design will be released in Japan on March 2, 2006 and cost 16,800 yen (about 140 bucks US.) The redesign retains all the functionality of the standard DS, but makes things smaller, lighter and brighter.

The modified dual screen handheld has been tweaked into a smaller chassis. The new unit measures up to 133 mm wide by 73.9 mm tall by 21.5 thick. (that's compared to 148.7 x 84.7 x 28.99 mm in the original.) DS Lite weighs 218g, compared to the 275 g of the original.

DS Lite's biggest new technical feature is its updated set of backlit LCD screens. The system is brighter overall, and will give the user the ability to select from four different levels of brightness for viewing and/or battery consumption. A few other cosmetic changes were made to the new DS Lite -- there's a new hinge design, the power light was put on the left side of the hinge and is visible while the clamshell is closed, the mic is moved to top/center while the speakers are more centered, the Select and Start buttons are set on the bottom instead of top, and the power button is no longer on the front, and all of the dark button colors are changed to whites and grays. The cute DS logo is also placed on the front. Basic functionality, otherwise, looks to be identical to the original DS.

i dont have a DS yet, so this will be cool to purchase. Nintendo has always been like that, like the GBA were redesign to GBA SP.

yeah. true. and how the GameBoy became the current GameBoy Micro also.

It's kind of like a custom for Nintendo I guess.

the new design isn't going to be much different from the origianl model, becasue if u calculate the length and weight its barely any difference, its just a way nintendo use these kinds of strategy to market their product...the only good thing about this new model is taht the connection is supposely alot better then the old one..and the color of the case is alot mroe slick...but regardless of the samll differences people are willing to purchase the product, making it a excellent marketing strategy

haha, it's so funny how nintendo and other game companies market like this.

i remember, 10 years ago, nintendo first came out with nintendo, then a completely diff. system, gameboy, then super nintendo, n64, etc... each system is completely diff. from the previous..
nowadays, a system is moderately diff. from its predecessor.

eg, ps2, smaller version of ps2 and now this. -_-

Very nice !!! The only reason why I did not buy the DS was because of how BULKY it was. Now that it's lighter and looks better, definately my consider one now.

I must say that NIntendo is continuing its Ipod style design and try to lure more non-gamers into gaming.

I believe the redesign will boost even MORE sales of the DS. I don't understand why would they announce it now, since it would potentially hurt their sales of the original DS until the release.
And considering that many japanese turned to the PSP when they can't find any DS for a month already, Nintendo should be careful..

There's no reason in using larger LCDs because of the already fixed resolution. If they did just use a larger screen with the old resolution, you'd have bigger pixels and it wouldn't be as crisp as before.

Nintendo will keep that in mind (bigger screen considering Sony's PSP hype) when developping the next gameboy. And it will help a lot if it can play Gc caliber graphics. :rotf:

but then again, sony ps2 came out with the slim version... its not as if the original DS will not longer be compatible with games or whatever. its just an improved version of DS with extra addtions.. i think it'll be great

Hmm, while smaller can be better, I would prefer a bigger LCD screen for graphics. I don't want to have to squint to see what I'm looking at (exaggerating, but it may eventually get to a very small size).

ds lite is so awesome. its so much brighter than the old ds. the only bad part is the somewhat shorter battery life due to the brighter screen, but you can adjust the screen brightness to your liking

I think the best upgrade was gameboy advance to gameboy sp. It was probably the only upgrade that was worth considering if you already owned a gameboy advance. As for DS lite, if you alrdy own a DS dont bother. However if you dont have a DS yet, surprisingly, DS lite and DS cost the same so i think the choice is obviuos.

They are going to be releasing the Opera internet browser for the DS in a few months. I think sometime in September. So with that you'll be able to surf the net. I think there's no Flash suppor though...not sure about other things. I'll probably be picking it up though, I forget the price but likely around 40-50$. It'll be useful to check my email whenever I'm out.

You can use the touchscreen to write urls and fill in form fields by writing out the letters which is a much better format for input than the PSP.

in sony's defese, the ps2 was out for approx 4 years prior to the redesign.
nintendo's marketing strategy has been the same for awhile. release a new system and 1-2 years later release an updated version to keep up the sales.
